We recently sat down with Andrea Nanigian, co-founder of CarOracle, to talk about the most common mistakes people make when buying or leasing a vehicle, especially here in North County.

What is the most common mistake people make when dealing with your type of service?

The most common mistake is narrowing the decision too early, either around a specific vehicle or a single quote from one dealership, without seeing the broader market context.

Most buyers assume that one competitive quote represents the market. In reality, incentives, dealer-level programs, financing structures, and inventory conditions can vary significantly across Southern California. Not everything is publicly advertised, and not everything is captured in online listings or AI tools.

The mistake isn’t lack of research — it’s being too narrow. When you widen the lens, better options often appear.

What usually happens when people get this wrong?

When buyers lock into a decision too quickly, the consequences tend to show up later.

LendingTree published research showing that nearly four in ten car shoppers experience buyer’s remorse. The common reasons are overpaying, payments that feel too high after the fact, or realizing they chose the wrong vehicle for their needs.

Unlike many purchases, a vehicle isn’t easy to unwind. These are depreciating assets. If you try to reverse course, you’re often looking at thousands of dollars in losses. Once you sign, you’re largely committed — whether it was the optimal decision or not.

That’s why getting the structure right upfront matters.

Are there differences specific to San Elijo Hills, Bressi Ranch, Carlsbad, or North County that make this issue more common?

Yes — primarily convenience and time constraints.

Many families in North County are balancing demanding careers and full schedules. It’s completely understandable to prioritize the closest dealership or the fastest path to completion.

The limitation is geographic and relational. Most consumers realistically shop within a small radius and interact with whichever dealership they happen to visit first.

We operate differently. We cast a much wider net across Southern California and work within a network of dealer partners we’ve built relationships with over time. That network matters. We know which stores consistently deliver strong pricing, clear communication, and a professional client experience — and we avoid situations where we don’t feel confident in the process.

That broader reach and curated network can make a meaningful difference, particularly for higher-priced vehicles or more specific configurations. It’s not practical for most buyers to track that market depth on their own.

What is something about your industry that most people don’t realize until they’ve experienced it?

Most people don’t realize how dramatically the automotive landscape has expanded.

A few decades ago, choice was relatively limited. Today there are hundreds of models across dozens of brands, spanning overlapping price points, technologies, and segments. Brands that barely existed in the U.S. market years ago now compete directly with long-established luxury manufacturers.

The market has become more complex, not less.

At the same time, the financial structures — leasing, financing programs, residuals, incentives — have become more layered.

It makes sense that objective guidance exists in other large transactions like real estate. Many buyers are surprised to learn that similar representation is available for vehicles as well.

When should someone pause and get help instead of continuing alone?

There are a few patterns we see repeatedly:

You’re stuck in research mode. If you’ve spent multiple evenings comparing trims, reading forums, and watching reviews but still feel unsure, more information probably isn’t the solution. At that point, clarity is more valuable than data.
You’re trying to time the market. We often hear, “If I wait two more weeks, will the deal improve?” Sometimes incentives do change. But we’ve also seen buyers wait through year-end or model transitions and end up losing color choices or the exact configuration they wanted. Waiting for a marginal improvement can sometimes cost you the right vehicle.
You’re focused only on the monthly payment. Payment matters — but it’s only one variable. Structure, depreciation, long-term ownership cost, and exit flexibility matter just as much.

If you see yourself in one of those situations, it may be time to step back and widen the lens.

What should someone verify before working with an auto broker?

There are a few objective things every buyer should check:

Are they licensed? In California, anyone arranging vehicle sales for compensation must hold a valid dealer or broker license. That license number should be publicly displayed, and it can be verified through the California DMV.
What do the reviews actually say? Don’t just look at star ratings. Read the details. Are clients describing thoughtful guidance and transparency — or just speed and convenience?
How do they get compensated? A reputable broker should clearly explain how they are paid and how that aligns with your interests.
Do they take time to understand your situation? If the conversation feels rushed or purely transactional — as in “tell me the exact car and I’ll find it” — you may be missing the advisory component. A good broker should be willing to discuss alternatives and structure, not just locate inventory.

This is a significant financial transaction. A few minutes of verification can prevent long-term regret.

What is one practical step someone in our community could take this week to avoid problems?

One practical step: Define the real-world use case before shopping.

Write down how the vehicle will actually be used (daily driving, school runs, road trips, third-row frequency, parking/garage constraints), then list must-haves and nice-to-haves based on that.

Vehicles keep getting larger, and families’ needs change fast — especially when moving into bigger vehicles for flexibility. Clarifying the use case first prevents costly misalignment later.
